Animals Ahoy!

In September, October, and November the Floating Classroom will be working with Year 1 classes from Hallfield Primary School across six sessions to deliver our literacy programme: Animals Ahoy! The project will encourage a love of language while developing participants’ skills and confidence in verbal and written expression. Topics taught on board will be closely linked to the national curriculum, providing pupils with the opportunity to consolidate and apply learning introduced at school in a unique, hands-on education environment.

Pupils join Floating Classroom teachers Darren and Lucy aboard the barge. Equipped with some very special binoculars, participants become intrepid explorers on the hunt for animals and searching for the best ways to describe them. Over the course of the project they will encounter some familiar creatures as well more exotic and unusual beasts, with sessions closely linked to local wildlife and the story books covered at school during this term, such as Dear Zoo and Giraffes Can’t Dance. The programme will culminate with the production of an audiobook by each class, comprised of descriptive sentences and soundscapes created by the pupils taking part.
